Squirrels love Sunflowers

….Or something does.  Three, count them three, entire sunflower plants have been eaten.   I haven’t the slightest clue by what, but seems to be an animal, as they are taking big bites out of leaves.  Peculiar, though, as I do have a chicken wire fence around all my little veggies in the Ballard Garden.  Why is it always the Ballard garden?

On another note, I’ll be testing the theory of “Pacific Maritime Growing Seasons” when I start a garden down in Three Tree Point next week.  Do you know where that is?  I didn’t either.  It’s right on the water – gorgeous.  On the list of things I’ve never planted – corn and lemongrass.

I’m still hoping to get that Iranian tobacco seed in the ground somewhere…….not many clients requesting smoking tobacco these days.

Tomato Down

Yesterday I got a call from the Ballard Garden.  Seems the Sunday rains took out one of three tomato plants I have in the ground there.  I cursed myself instantly for not building a cloche.

I’m sure pioneers never worried about plants and babied them for the growing season, but I keep getting the feeling that I”m slowly killing these vegetables as opposed to nurturing them.  I’m starting to have anxiety that come August harvest, there will be nothing to pick and I’ll have to refund everyone’s money.

 Oh, to be a gardener-for-hire.
